The Wrong Way to Use Twitter: Hashtags and Cartoons

Hey Hubzers,

Some critics would have you think that Twitter is all fun and games, but it’s important not to underestimate Twitter‘s potential. Last week , Saudi Arabian Prince Alwaleed bin Talal was rumored to be in the Twitter market, looking to own 3% of Twitter. His Twitter stake would be in addition to his other shares in big-deal corporations such as Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp., Apple, and Time Warner.

Twitter is gaining a lot of steam as current events develop and Twitter proves to be a valuable tool in relaying real-time information and conversation. However, a recent movement spawned from Occupy WallStreet protest, has proven that there is a wrong way to use twitter.

For example, no one wants to hear about what you eat unless your a celebrity (and that is debatable):

One Twitter mistake down, let’s hash out the rest:

Love it or hate it, the Occupy movement is spreading from city to city. We are seeing small demonstrations and monstrous demonstrations, all of which are most likely stemming from a loaded Facebook event.  No offense to Occupy but follower’s of the movement have proven that there is a wrong way to use Twitter. Occupy is incredibly disjointed in general but with social media at their fingertips we should see some sort of unity– NOPE.

There are over 100 thousand hashtags for the Occupy movement. A hashtag is supposed to be a topic marker, in order to make search results more relevant. Hashtags can vary from events such as #TheWorldSeries to general #MLB to the down-right ridiculous (which are the most popular) #McRib, #puertoricanprobelms, and #iconfess.  In Canada, #JamaicanNames is trending.

FYI hashtags were actually developed by Twitter users to sort through the mania

Hashtags break through the clutter of twitter and unite people with common interests from the general to the specific. Google+ understands the power of the Twitter hashtag and therefore has incorporated into the Google+ experience. Beliebers find one another hashtag (#getwellselena) by hashtag (#dieselena). Ultra-fandome can be brutal– and I digress.

This is my shout-out to the Occupy movement, please, please, use Twitter correctly/efficiently/reasonably and choose one: #OWS, #Occupy, @OccupyWS, #OccupyWallSt, #OccupyWallStreet, #OccupySanDiego, #OccupyCoralGables, #takewallst, #nypd, #p2, #occupie.

FYI using hashtags in your tweets is a great way to get some traffic within search results. The recommended dose of hashtags is no more than three per Tweet.

Twitter isn’t all fun and games (in fact there are no games on twitter, and I doubt that will ever change seeing as Dick Costolo was just crooning over Twitter‘s simplicity since social media birth) but Twitter is definitely fun. It’s a blessing how impactful 140-characters can be. We are at 250 million tweets a day and counting!

Here is another from AllTwitter’s compilation of the 10 best Twitter cartoons, enjoy!
