GraphRank Vs. EdgeRank [Infographic]

T.G.I.F.F. Hubzers!

I just found an infographic that clarifies Facebook’s new algorithm, GraphRank.

Facebook announced GraphRank at the legendary F8 Conference last month along with the big Timeline announcement. The idea behind GraphRank is to help users find apps and content based on how well those things fare among a user’s social circle; so you find content in the newsfeed that is relevant to you.

This makes app discovery a completely social affair, no longer will you have to brave the sterile pages of app stores alone; there are algorithms afoot to point you in the right direction.

But this is also a big deal for app developers. In a blog post on Facebook’s Developer blog, Bret Taylor discusses GraphRank:

Distribution through News Feed, Ticker, and Timeline will be based on Graph Rank, the underlying system that manages discovery of Open Graph activity around Facebook. Graph Rank is designed to give more prominence to engaging activity. The transparency of the system should enable you to predictably measure your app’s performance….Graph Rank is also personalized. We know people are friends with both their college roommates and their colleagues at work, and those relationships are different. Just because my mom is interested in the movies I am watching doesn’t mean she is interested in my Github checkins. Graph Rank isn’t a global score, but a personalized view of you and your friends’ tastes.

GraphRank can be used to not only locate you target audience but also engage them. According to AllFacebook.com, Facebook is moving into “intention-based advertising”. This works “by making explicit the specific types of connections users have to objects.”

Basically, GraphRank is the EdgeRank for app developers.
