Facebook Is Reducing Notification Emails

Here is a blessing for hyper-active Facebook users out there:

Facebook just announced that they will be testing a new feature designed to reduce the amount of notification emails sent to users.

The feature was announced earlier today on the Wall of all Walls (Facebook’s Wall).

We’re testing a feature for people who are very active on Facebook and receive lots of email notifications from us. We’ll provide a new summary email and turn off most individual email notifications. If you want to turn them back on, there’s a control in your account settings.

In the past users have been able to adjust their setting in order to select which notifications are worthy of an email. However, some users opt out of the trek into Facebook’s account settings and cope daily with the blitzkrieg of redundant notification emails.

For me, notification emails make Facebook vacations nearly impossible. They feed my rabid addiction for social media, jamming both my inbox and my trash. Summary emails are a saving grace.

Google+ sure has lit a fire under Facebook’s fanny. Recently Facebook announced that they will be pushing selective sharing via smart lists, otherwise known as Facebook Circles.

However, in regards to this Email Frequency update, it all seems a little incongruous. Not only is this feature a little repetitive seeing as users can adjust their account  settings in order to control Facebooks slew of emails, but it also brings to mind the protocol by which Facebook keeps users in the know about changes to the Facebook platform.

What I mean to say is Facebook will send you an email to notify you of a comment on your status but updates, like this one or the more controversial  facial recognition software used to optimize tagging, go unmentioned. It is an oddball system, just sayin’…

Leave your two cents and let us know what you think!
