Facebook Gestures are More Than “Like”: “Read”, “Listen”, “Watch”
F8 is definitely the straw that stirs the drink. The online community is absolutely wild with bold opinions regarding all the change going on at Facebook. However, overall, the general consensus is that Facebook is kicking ass. Whether or not people like the changes, Facebook will continue to exist and users will most likely maintain their profiles with unwavering resilience.
At the F8 conference Keynote there was a huge emphasis on sharing, or user engagement. It was officially announced that Facebook is adding new features such as the Timeline, Open Graph, along with music/media platforms.
In addition to the aforementioned updates, are a few buttons that remain to be unseen rumors under development. Now, the “Like” button is an absolute standard across the web. Facebook buttons carry huge sex-appeal for a webpage, in fact over 100,000 websites are wearing the “Like” button.
But as far as engagement goes, a “Like” is merely an endorsement. It isn’t about “Likes”, it is about engagement. Facebook is working off the “Like” button to launch Facebook Gestures.
Facebook Gestures
Move-over “Like”– seriously! Facebook Gestures allows Facebook’s partners and developers to turn pretty much any action into a button. Hopefully this does not get too out of hand. I don’t want to see any of my friends pooping profile pictures or drooling comments, at least not more than once, and I digress…
More buttons are coming, probably within the next week or so. Google what?
Despite the hush-hush on these new buttons that specifically compliment the music/media platforms to come, TechCrunch was able to lift the lid on the “Like” button’s first cousins:
“Read” is a plug-in that will allow publishers to add the button to their site in order to facilitate sharing. This button can be clicked by a user, and automatically feeds into the open graph, so you can share with your friends what you are reading. For example, “Justin Bieber is Reading the Hubze Blog“, would appear in the Open Graph (The Beeb Feed) of JB and all his friends and Hubze would become the most popular blog in the world for an hour. A blogger can dream.
The other buttons, “Listen“, and “Watch” are similar. All of these buttons are optional for users and according to TC’s MG Siegler, they “will also have ‘pause’ and ‘undo’ capabilities if a user decides they actually don’t want to share their activity.”
Media is going to start feeding directly through Facebook to your fingertips, eyelids, and brain-stems. Facebook is partnered with music host, Spotify, and also announced at F8 that they will be partnering with Yahoo News. On top of that, Facebook is also partnered with Hulu to provide for all your video streaming needs. The Facebook arsenal is loaded!
Good luck getting-off Facebook!

yeah this part will be interesting. But I get what they are trying to do. It's all part of the Open Graph apps. So if you watch a movie or listen to a song you don't have to click "Like" on it. It will just show you "watched" or "listened" to it.. It's a great idea to further increase engagement. Which in the end means more ad sales. ~Scott

[...] The trouble starts when instead of simply “Liking” a website or app, you click “add to timeline” this gives the website or app permission to post your actions on your wall for all to see. This is where the potential for embarrassment lies. If you have the app activated you can share information that you wouldn’t necessarily want shared to all your friends. Whether it’s , listening to bad 90′s pop music or watching a cheesy teen drama, this is posted to your timeline for all to see. For more on the App itself refer to Hubze Blog. [...]
